I've been cooking since I was a little girl- my dad is a fantastic cook and connoisseur of all fine things. On his weekends, we'd go somewhere fancy- the Pump Room or the Cape Cod Room in Chicago-on Friday and spend Saturday and Sunday shopping for ingredients and cooking at home. Saturday mornings at his house were for Jacques Pepin and Julia Child, notsomuch cartoons. I received my first wok in 3rd grade (it was red- and electric) and became the master cook in my mom's house... she makes a mean tuna salad sandwich... and that's about it. (Sorry mom!)
18 years of professional cooking have provided incomparable experience. They’ve led me to cook in California, Colorado, up & down the East Coast, The Dominican Republic, South Africa, Hawaii, Morocco, Cyprus, and on a Super Yacht- somewhere in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. (That was an interesting adventure!) I've spent 10 years cooking for Oprah Winfrey- and if that wasn't reward enough, I've had the incredible honor to cook for many of her high-profile guests -- including President Barack and Michelle Obama, Sarah, Duchess of York, and my absolute idol, Maya Angelou. I’ve led cooking classes at the Oprah Winfrey Academy for Girls. I've inspired others to want to cook- to be creative, to be fearless in the kitchen- that part I love.
I’m always asked to define my style of cooking. I struggle with that because I’m fluent in most any cuisine and there’s nothing I don’t love to cook- or eat for that matter! I think I’d say: Bright. Adventurous. Balanced. Creative. Sentimental. I tend to stray from mundane and enjoy putting my own twist on tradition. I love those weeks right between summer and fall, when the farmer's market is literally exploding. I’m currently obsessed with black garlic, could eat some iteration of beans every day, and am always working on perfecting my homemade ricotta. Oprah’s favorite thing is my Turkey Burger, I make a really sublime Moroccan Braised Lamb, and our family recipe for Meatballs & Sunday Gravy has been known to cure just about anything.
